Greetings from
Our New Principal

Dear East Hills Families:

Before I tell you a little bit about myself, I would like to share how excited I am to be here at East Hills. I have heard so many wonderful things about your dedication and support to our many programs and events. I look forward to continuing that tradition with you.

I came from the district of Oyster Bay-East Norwich where I had been principal for the past seven years of the two elementary schools that serve Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. During that time, I had developed strong relationships and watched the students blossom and flourish. It was a difficult decision to leave such a warm and nurturing place and I leave behind many caring and committed friends and colleagues. I am eager to share with you all that I have learned from my experiences in Oyster Bay.

Prior to my time in Oyster Bay, I taught in the Rockville Centre School District, where I realized that I had made the right career choice. I learned many things in the classroom, but most importantly, I learned that the field of education is truly the most noble and rewarding of professions.

I received my B.S in Elementary Education, Pre-Kindergarten and Grades K- 6 and went on to receive my M.S. in Special Education, K-12. I also hold a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration. It is my intention, as a lifelong learner, to continue my studies and earn a doctorate in education sometime in the future.

On a personal note, I am married to a supportive and loving husband, Steve. We have two children, Emma and Luke, who make each new day a joyous experience.

I have always had an open door policy. The hallways are my office. I love knowing the students and want them to feel comfortable coming to me at any time. I enjoy greeting them in the morning as they arrive and stopping in the classrooms throughout the day. Similarly, I welcome all the parents to stop by and meet me, as I hope to quickly get to know all of our families at East Hills. I will be at East Hills most of the summer; all parents and students are welcome to drop by and say hello.

I am honored, and consider myself fortunate to be in Roslyn and I look forward to becoming part of the District's highly successful team. Please be assured that I will devote myself fully to the task ahead, a task that I consider most important and worthy of my strongest efforts.

If I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me. It will be my honor to support and serve all the students of East Hills School.

Sincerely,

Allison Brown
Principal

Welcome

East Hills SchoolThe East Hills School is an elementary school that educates more than 500 students in the second through fifth grades in a warm, welcoming, and enriching atmosphere. Its multicultural population is representative of more than twenty different nations.

Our philosophy, and that of the Roslyn Public Schools, is to provide, through education, an opportunity for, and an inspiration to, each child to continue a lifelong quest for truth and knowledge. Furthermore, we believe that each student has the right to the opportunity to grow to capacity in intellect, emotional maturity, and aesthetic appreciation while accepting responsibility to self and others.

This philosophy is our governing credo. It is the basis for our building-wide collegial atmosphere and aura of respect and dignity. The youngsters are offered myriad opportunities for involvement such as vocal and instrumental music, intramural sports, an after-school art program, computers, 5th Grade Class Council, community service projects and lunchtime enrichment workshops.

In addition to these extensive offerings our regular day is also filled with exciting and enriching programs for all. These include numerous curricula related field trips, cultural arts presentations, monthly nutrition days, our annual book fair, and our 3C's character education program.

These offerings enhance our basic program in which instruction is delivered in a continuum of hands on, interdisciplinary lessons involving all staff members. Thematic units are presented throughout the school; a literature based reading program is employed in the primary grades and a novel based approach is implemented in the fourth and fifth. Process writing experiences are linked with the reading of literature to create a comprehensive language arts program for all students. Computer instruction, as with science, is accomplished in both the classroom and building laboratories. Special areas of study such as library/media, physical education, speech, art and enrichment are also deeply integrated into the classroom program.

We constantly strive to expand the experiences of our children. Staff training is extensive and continuous throughout the year. Parent support is astounding.

It is our remarkable staff and involved parents who have joined together to make East Hills such a wonderful school.

A Tree Grows at East Hills

The PTA dedicated a tree on May 2, 2008 in honor the faculty and staff of the East Hills School. In presenting the tree to the school, PTA Presidents Arianne Golub and Victoria Zecher expressed their hope that the beautiful magnolia will be a daily reminder for years to come of the respect and appreciation of the East Hills family for the administrators, teachers and staff who work so hard for our students.

Photo: PTA Presidents Arianne Golub and Victoria Zecher cut the ribbon on the new tree with Principal Dr. Mark Rosenbaum, Assistant Principal Nichole Lewis, the East Hills faculty and staff, Dr. Richman and Central Office Administrators, and members of the Board of Education.

Mural Celebrates the Three C's

Our Fish Mural represents the "Three C's" program here at East Hills, which encourages students to have courage, learn to compromise and to cooperate. Our students earn a fish every time they "catch the wave of kindness" and demonstrate courage, compromise, or cooperation. When a student earns a fish they put their name on it and place the fish on the mural.

We are very thankful to Ms. Buschfrers for all the time and effort she put into creating the mural, and we are very proud of all our students who contribute to its beauty every day.

Gift of the Class of 2007

The students of the fifth-grade class of 2007 made this beautiful work of art as their class's gift to the East Hills School. Created under the guiding hand of Art Teacher Shari Wexler, the eight translucent panels contain the initials of every student in the class and have been permanently placed on the windows above the school entrance nearest the gymnasium.
